Department of Public Law

The Public Law Department is basic academic unit within the Faculty of Law at the Open University of Tanzania organized to carry on and develop the instructional materials, teaching, research and consultancy activities. The current head of department is Ms Mbiki Mkude Msumi who is a lecturer in law at the Faculty. The Public Law head of department has the responsibility to maintain academic quality and departmental vitality through the oversight of teaching, research and consultancy, recruitment, and retention of teaching staff as well as students. It is in this department the smooth daily operation of the teaching of Public Law related courses is conducted as per the University schedules. Also, it is in this department public law related research and consultancy activities are conducted and managed. The Head has a duty of making sure that all courses are properly updated, taught and assessed. The courses falling under this department include: Constitution and Legal system of East Africa; Criminal Law and Procedure; Legal Method; Arbitration and alternative Dispute Resolution; Communication Skills for Lawyers (Compulsory non-credit Course); Administrative Law; Law of Evidence; Law of Torts; Family Law; Public International law Succession and Trust; Jurisprudence; Civil Procedure; Legal Research and LL.B dissertation; Legal Ethics; Islamic Law; International Criminal Law; Human Rights Law; Criminology and Penology; Among one of main responsibilities of Public Law Department is obtaining up-to-date, relevant and accurate departmental academic and administrative related data for processing and or for generating relevant information to guide the university management for accurate and timely decision making on university matters.
